The first Herrings-Market in Helsinki was organized in 1743. Still at the end of the 19th century the harbor looked very picturesque with large sailing boats docking at the quay  (see  featured image from the ©Helsinki Museum picture archive).

Eng: Also today the fishermen sell their produce from the boat at the quay, but of course they have motor boats. Still, it’s a nice atmosphere and if you like fish, this is the place to be next year. You can buy Herring and fish in all variations during this market in the beginning of October. Just dress warmly and have your cash ready to leave your pockets. Card payment is not always accepted. Large sailing boats can still be seen in harbor area, either they serve as restaurants or they show off just for the fun of it.

DE: So wie damals verkaufen die Fischer ihre Waren vom Boot aus, die am Kai angedockt sind. Aber natürlich sind es heute Motorboote. Trotzdem ist es eine sehr nette Fischmarkt-Atmosphäre. Wenn Sie gerne Fisch essen, dann ist der Südhafen in Helsinki für Sie im nächsten Jahr Anfang Oktober genau der richtige Ort. Hier gibt es Hering und Fisch in allen Variationen zum Mitnehmen oder probieren. Denken Sie an warme Kleidung und an Bargeld, “traditionell” heißt bei vielen Ständen auch, dass Kartenzahlung nicht funktioniert.

Und Segelboote sind auch zu sehen, entweder als Restaurant oder sie segeln im Hafen, weils so schön aussieht.
