Hundreds and thousands of migrating birds gather each year in September on the large fields of Viikki Bay in Helsinki, close to where I live. Helsingin Sanomat, the main Newspaper in Finland, took a video of a tremendous cloud of Canada-Geese a few hours ago.

Watch the video (loads sometimes a little slow) and then listen to Cantus Arcticus III by Einojuhani Rautavaara. In his composition, the birds are not geese, but impressive whooper swans. Einojuhani Rautavaari was born in 1928 and he is still living in Helsinki. Jean Sibelius donated a scholarship to Rautavaara in 1955 (2 years before he died). It had been given to the then 90 year old Sibelius, who razor-sharply figured, he wouldn’t need it anymore. It enabled Rautavaara to study a.o. at the Juillard School for Music in New York. On my sightseeing tour “Sights & Music” with a focus on classic I also play samples of music from Rautavaara. It’s as Finnish as it can get and “goosebumps” have been observed on different bodyparts…to stay in line with the topic.

Schauen Sie das Video an (lädt manchmal etwas langsam) und hören Sie dann das Stück Cantus Arcticus III von Einojuhani Rautavaara. In dieser Komposition hören wir zwar keine Gänse, sondern die noch größeren Singschwäne, aber das Gefühl stimmt. Einojuhani Rautavaara wurde 1928 geboren und lebt noch heute in Helsinki. Jean Sibelius übertrug 1955 ein Stipendium auf ihn, das ihm verliehen worden war. Vermutlich war der damals schon 90jährige Komponist der Ansicht, dass er es wohl nicht mehr brauchen würde (er starb 1957). Das Stipendium ermöglichte es Rautavaara, u.a. an der Juillard School for Music in New York zu studieren. Auf meiner Musik-Stadtführung mit Schwerpunkt Klassik spiele ich auch kurze Stücke von Rautavaara. Ein sehr finnisches Erlebnis und Gänsehaut wurde bereits beobachtet…um beim Thema zu bleiben.
